Pefkos, Rhodes.
Again just me and Kate on this holiday. We ventured to the hottest place on earth. Lindos. Which for some reason, every time we’ve visited previously, it’s always been about 10 degrees hotter than anywhere else.
Pefkos is just on the far side of Lindos, quite a nice little area, not overcrowded or full of tacky British bars, just a handful of restaurants and bars and a few souvenir shops. For some reason every restaurant had offers for 3 course meals making them cheaper than just a single course. So for the first few days we’d have these massive meals and by the time it came to the fourth day, we just couldn’t face that much food again and went to a gyros kiosk and had the smallest dinner of the week, but also one of the best. Staying on the subject of dinners, we broke one of the golden rules of holidays, we had a Chinese. Very nice it was too. As they say, some rules are meant to be broken. We hired a car and did some exploring, remembering not to follow any signs that said ‘holiday route’ We had another trip to Rhodes old town, which always feels like I’ve missed some of it. We went to a butterfly ‘sanctuary’ sort of place, it was a valley that attracts loads of rare butterflies and reptiles. We weren’t there at the right time to see the hundreds of different types of butterfly but the valley was very serene and calm. Lots of lizards and dragonflies to make up for the lack of other arthropods.
There is so much to see on Rhodes, I think we need to visit again to catch up on all the bits we didn’t get to. The Temple of The Gods was a particular favourite of mine, loads of old ruins and columns, loads of archaeology at the ancient site of Kamiros.
We attempted to climb a hill with a monastery on top, the steps were broad and well worn, we kept climbing ’til we were above the tree tops, each step was numbered and we reached step no. 270 & we both stopped and said “nope”. There were no barriers or safety rail, what just seemed a straight drop off the edge down a vertical cliff. We decided that was enough, the monastery wasn’t that interesting after all.
