    Holiday Rules

Rules are made to help, not to hinder A holiday hat, if worn, must be bought at the holiday destination. It cannot be bought prior to travel. EVEN if bought on a previous holiday!… We will visit / stay in a place that is virtually unpronounceable Jelly MUST be eaten whenever possible/available.  It CANNOT be refused You must remove your watch whenever you do or say something stoopid. The theory being that if you are indeed that stoopid then you would obviously not need a watch as you probably are unable to tell the time anyway. Go-Karting must be done (same rules as apply for jelly – except you’re not…

    2007

Pateo Village, Albufeira, Portugal. Pateo Village in Albufeira, Portugal. For those who don’t know, Pateo is Portuguese for Patio. So we stayed on someone’s massive patio. The accommodation was massive, we had two apartments each with two double bedrooms. Proper double bedroom size with wardrobes and bedside tables. In the living room there was a cupboard big enough to accommodate a dead body. Or a living one as we found out. On the line of such macabre thoughts, we were in Portugal when Madeline McCann disappeared. There wasn’t much interest in the case from local news, we found out about it watching Sky News on the TV in the apartment.…

    The Specials

A tale from history The Specials My friend Carl, from Jersey (Channel Islands), bought himself and me tickets to see The Specials on May 6th 2009. Carl flew over the day before and stayed at our house so that we could drive to Exeter to get the train to London do a bit of shopping, have some food then go and dance like nutters for a couple of hours then go home. That didn’t happen. Instead we got as far as the going to the gig part only to find, on arrival, it had been cancelled, Terry had a sore thumb or something. So, the nice friendly bouncers (weird I…

    2006

A pretty uneventful holiday in Cyprus. We visited a few new places. Different falling down stuff, revisited Tomb of the Kings – it was still stupidly hot. The holiday we originally booked would have been a bit further down the road, I think it was called the Tomb Of The Kings Apartments or something like that, but Sarah found some really bad reviews that had been posted very recently, so we decided to move the booking. A bit further out than our usual bookings that tended to be right in the middle of Paphos, but it was a nice place all the same. I seem to remember it was the…

    2005

Or, 24hr Tula as the holiday was nicknamed. Our first visit to the once party capital of Crete, Agios Nikolaos. Ag Nik was the first tourist town in Crete and was considered quite a posh resort for a while, until Malia became the place to go. We were staying a little way out, I think it was about a 1k walk to the town, but it was a beautiful seaside road so it didn’t seem to matter really. There were some excellent restaurants in town, but one of our favourites was just by the apartments, I have a feeling it was called Hercules or something similar. The owner was a…

    2004

This year we visited less ruins and things, me and Kate went to watch the Cyprus W.R.C. (bloody good it was too) Saw a snake. Bumped into the infamous Crocodile George who drove the jeep when we went to the rally. We also spent a bit of time getting married. The wedding was excellent. The meal was fantastic. The ‘stag night’ was eventful. Who can forget watching Yordi (juices of a laaaddyyy) from the bar windmilling his punches after getting into a fight with the guy who ran the bar next door? I’ll never forget the garlic crab starter from the meal we had before playing golf, more garlic than…

Frixos Apartments, Malia, Crete Frixos apartments in Malia, the party capital of Crete. It was stupid hot. We arrived in the middle of a heatwave were it hadn’t rained for weeks, everything was covered in a layer of dust & sand. I think it got to about 41 degrees on our last day. It was so hot the bar staff were giving out bottles of water to people sunbathing in their garden area. A few of us went off on a skootopia ride, little buggies we drove around the island on an organised tour. It was also the only day it had rained for months, not that it was any…

    2002

Basilica Apartments, Paphos, Cyprus The one were we got engaged. I’ll tell you something you might not know. I was worried about going through the bag check on the way out that security might find the ring and demand to see what was in the little box in my hand luggage, especially as I’d recently read about someone who had ended up having to propose in the security section of an airport, when he was made to open the package that he had in his bag that had the ring in it. Also, I had made no plans as to when and where I’d do it. For all I knew,…

    2001

Villa Bini Becca, Menorca That villa holiday. The one with many mishaps, arguments, too much gin and Carl getting so drunk that, well, we all know what he did. Let’s start with the injuries. On the first day I walked into a wall and got a black eye, Derek developed a swollen tongue and we spent the whole week trying to get him to say ‘spicy sausages’, Hippy Chris decided it would be a good time to learn to skateboard. (because of course we bought skateboards on holiday) He manged one foot on the board, lost it and smashed his elbow, off to hospital he went only to return with…

    2000

Royal Rose Apartments, Faliraki, Rhodes Go Karts, slingshots and history all in one week. We arrived at an unfinished site, the rooms were all finished, as well as the pool area, but the bar was still being finished, it didn’t really make any difference to the holiday though. We turned up very late at night / early in the morning with no-one to greet us, but we did get a list of our rooms from somewhere and mine & Kate’s room was on the ground floor and the balcony doors were open, so we let ourselves in and sat around til everyone had their room keys when someone from reception…
