Pateo Village, Albufeira, Portugal. Pateo Village in Albufeira, Portugal. For those who don’t know, Pateo is Portuguese for Patio. So we stayed on someone’s massive patio. The accommodation was massive, we had two apartments each with two double bedrooms. Proper double bedroom size with wardrobes and bedside tables. In the living room there was a cupboard big enough to accommodate a dead body. Or a living one as we found out. On the line of such macabre thoughts, we were in Portugal when Madeline McCann disappeared. There wasn’t much interest in the case from local news, we found out about it watching Sky News on the TV in the apartment.…

Or, 24hr Tula as the holiday was nicknamed. Our first visit to the once party capital of Crete, Agios Nikolaos. Ag Nik was the first tourist town in Crete and was considered quite a posh resort for a while, until Malia became the place to go. We were staying a little way out, I think it was about a 1k walk to the town, but it was a beautiful seaside road so it didn’t seem to matter really. There were some excellent restaurants in town, but one of our favourites was just by the apartments, I have a feeling it was called Hercules or something similar. The owner was a…

This year we visited less ruins and things, me and Kate went to watch the Cyprus W.R.C. (bloody good it was too) Saw a snake. Bumped into the infamous Crocodile George who drove the jeep when we went to the rally. We also spent a bit of time getting married. The wedding was excellent. The meal was fantastic. The ‘stag night’ was eventful. Who can forget watching Yordi (juices of a laaaddyyy) from the bar windmilling his punches after getting into a fight with the guy who ran the bar next door? I’ll never forget the garlic crab starter from the meal we had before playing golf, more garlic than…

Frixos Apartments, Malia, Crete Frixos apartments in Malia, the party capital of Crete. It was stupid hot. We arrived in the middle of a heatwave were it hadn’t rained for weeks, everything was covered in a layer of dust & sand. I think it got to about 41 degrees on our last day. It was so hot the bar staff were giving out bottles of water to people sunbathing in their garden area. A few of us went off on a skootopia ride, little buggies we drove around the island on an organised tour. It was also the only day it had rained for months, not that it was any…

Basilica Apartments, Paphos, Cyprus The one were we got engaged. I’ll tell you something you might not know. I was worried about going through the bag check on the way out that security might find the ring and demand to see what was in the little box in my hand luggage, especially as I’d recently read about someone who had ended up having to propose in the security section of an airport, when he was made to open the package that he had in his bag that had the ring in it. Also, I had made no plans as to when and where I’d do it. For all I knew,…

    2001

Villa Bini Becca, Menorca That villa holiday. The one with many mishaps, arguments, too much gin and Carl getting so drunk that, well, we all know what he did. Let’s start with the injuries. On the first day I walked into a wall and got a black eye, Derek developed a swollen tongue and we spent the whole week trying to get him to say ‘spicy sausages’, Hippy Chris decided it would be a good time to learn to skateboard. (because of course we bought skateboards on holiday) He manged one foot on the board, lost it and smashed his elbow, off to hospital he went only to return with…
